BOUNDARIES
A Course-Based Approach

We all know healthy boundaries are important.

Indeed, long before boundaries were celebrated as an essential part of self-care, Robert Frost wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors.”

And yet, as Course students, the topic of boundaries brings up many significant questions:

How do we reconcile boundaries with the spiritual teaching that we ultimately have no boundaries, that the lines between us are a fiction of the mind?

When does an emphasis on setting boundaries get in the way of the supreme value of love and forgiveness?

How would the Course advise us to enact a boundary or even to end a relationship?

If you have puzzled over this conundrum, join the club. The good news, however, is that A Course in Miracles has some surprisingly direct things to say about boundaries. It brings both kindness and clear lines together into a higher synthesis that will cause us to rethink everything we thought we knew about this topic.

In the Circle’s first-ever workshop on boundaries, founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington will share what the Course itself teaches on the subject, but also how Jesus taught Course scribes Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford to navigate common boundary issues, including:

  • How to set a boundary with someone you have tried to help
  • What to do when overwork reaches a point of affecting health
  • How to deal with “the demands of the dependent”
  • How to communicate a boundary without hostility or embarrassment

As we head toward the holidays—a time fraught with boundary concerns—we hope you will join us for a one-of-a-kind treatment of this very important issue.

From our origin in 1993, the purpose of the Circle of Atonement has been to be a bridge into the profound and unparalleled wisdom of A Course in Miracles. We clarify the Course’s sometimes difficult language in order to make possible a deeper understanding of its teachings. We then help you put those teachings into practice, explaining how to apply them in your everyday life. Our work grows out of our commitment to be as faithful as possible to what A Course in Miracles says. It also grows out of our years of dedication to walking this path ourselves and our desire to see the Course’s purpose realized in the lives of students and in the world.
