What does A Course in Miracles say about therapy?

Whether you are in the therapeutic field or not, we hope you will join us and discover the Course’s original approach to this form of healing.

Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process and Practice is the first supplement to A Course in Miracles, dictated to Helen Schucman in 1973 and 1975. It begins by saying “Psychotherapy is the only form of therapy there is,” and then proceeds to lay out an approach to therapy based on the principles of the Course, one that is unlike any form of therapy currently practiced.

The supplement envisions professional therapists following this new approach, yet it does not stop there. It says that everyone is doing psychotherapy “in every relationship in which he enters.” In other words, we are all practicing therapy all the time, but we could be practicing it as the Course describes.

What is this new form of therapy and how exactly do we practice it? Those are the questions we aim to solve in our 13-week tour through the psychotherapy supplement, which will be held every Friday at 11 a.m. Eastern from January 14th – April 8th.

In each 1-hour class, Circle founder Robert Perry and executive director Emily Bennington will be your guides through every page in the supplement, so you have a greater understanding of its wisdom and how to apply it.

We will be covering a wealth of topics, including:

  • How a patient would ideally enter the process of therapy
  • The role of the therapist
  • What is the common goal of therapist and patient
  • Where God fits into the process of therapy
  • The relationship between mental illness and physical illness
  • How the therapist brings about healing
  • The question of payment, and more.

From our origin in 1993, the purpose of the Circle of Atonement has been to be a bridge into the profound and unparalleled wisdom of A Course in Miracles. We clarify the Course’s sometimes difficult language in order to make possible a deeper understanding of its teachings. We then help you put those teachings into practice, explaining how to apply them in your everyday life. Our work grows out of our commitment to be as faithful as possible to what A Course in Miracles says. It also grows out of our years of dedication to walking this path ourselves and our desire to see the Course’s purpose realized in the lives of students and in the world.
